Summary: Not so good
Comment: I have been doing my taxes since 1950, both individual and business. At one point I was a certified California tax preparer. I found TurboTax was usually a disappointment and a few years back TaxCut made a gross error carrying forward a stock loss. I have found TaxAct to be everything a person needs, check it out.

Summary: Don't expect much help from tech support
Comment: I had used this product for several years without a problem. But this year, for some reason yet to be discovered, Deduction Pro 2008 will not function. After a two hour chat with tech support and completely disabling my PC's configuration files (at their direction) it is clear that I simply had a damaged or corrupted CD.

The tech squad at H&R went so far as to suggest I might not have the basic speaker and monitor specs or enough hard drive space. IT AS AS IF THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE POSSIBILITY THAT I HAD A CORRUPTED SOFTWARE PACKAGE. They kept grasping at silly straws and wasting their and my time in the process. And get this - customer support cannot send me a replacement!!! Instead, I have to request a refund and then repurchase the software.

Later I found out that you can get Deduction Pro for FREE from H&R on line, and they make the con claim on the product box that it is a $19.95 value.

It is no wonder that anger over US manufacturing and industry continues to grow. Whatever happened to TRUE customer service?

Summary: Excellent product
Comment: I had been a faithful TurboTax user for many years, but their recent shenanigans caused me to look elsewhere. Since H&R Block's TaxCut had a money back guarantee, I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I'm very pleased with the software. It is full featured and yet easier to use than TurboTax. It has all the functionality I need (1040 plus schedules A thru E, with two schedule C's and all the supporting schedules), so they don't force you into a more expensive package.

Highly recommended!

Summary: Good Price for an Essential Quick Statrt
Comment: I have gone back-and-forth between Tax Cut and Turbo Tax for years. Turbo Tax messed up pricing for E-file one year, so I am on Tax Cut until they mess up. I use the disc all year because I have to do Estimated Tax adjustments all year. Tax Cut does a great job of transfering all the Estimated "Returns" to the new current year. Also, Transfer between raw filling out of forms and going through an interview is now easy and recommended by me. Getting a head start early is worth much more to me than the freebie or discounted additional programs offered by local retailers.

Summary: Update issues with Vista for a 2nd year straight
Comment: For the second year in a row, TaxCut updates are failing on my Windows Vista machine. I am not the only one to have this problem. Some have blamed Antivirus software:
http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=60138
But I do not think this is the issue. Last year I had a totally different AV software and I had the same failures.

I have worked out a manual work around, although it is ridiculous. The updater that TaxCut uses seems unable to acquire "create" permissions for its own directories, regardless of the fact that the permissions are set OK. I have verified this by the log files which generate installer error 1321 (The installer has insufficient priveleges...) Apparently, the installer has no problem updating existing files, it just cannot create new ones.

To work around this, do as follows:
- In TaxCut, choose "Update after I close the program".
- Close TaxCut and when Vista UAC asks permission to run the installer, click "Cancel".
- Locate the installer (should be in C:\ProgramData\TaxCut\2008\Update)
- Right click the file and choose "Run as administrator"
- When you encounter the first error, note the filename and location
- Go to the Start Menu and find Notepad. Right-click on the program icon and choose "Run as administrator"
- Put some text in the Notepad file. I put " ".
- Choose "File -> Save As" and save the file with the exact name and path that the installer complained about
- Choose "Retry" or "Continue" in the installer (I can't remember the exact wording)
- Repeat the last two steps for each file that needs to be created. I think there were 10-20 of them.

Eventually, once you have created all the files, the installer will succeed.

It does not matter what text you put in the file as long as you get the filename and path right. TaxCut will overwrite the file anyway.

This is a ridiculous work around, but I already paid for TaxCut and got a good deal on my AV software because of it. If I can make it through this year, I am going back to TaxAct in 2009.
